Misc European Publisher. Alternatively known as the Gutenberg Bible (for its attributed printer), the 42-line Bible (for its column length on the page), and the Mazarin Bible (for the 17th-century French cardinal who owned the fine copy that has long been referred to), the original edition of this Latin Bible is the incunabula of incunabulum-the first known book printed with moveable type in the Western world. It was published circa 1455 in the German city of Mainz, downstream from Frankfurt, in an edition of about 180 two-volume copies, of which only a few dozen remain. This large two-volume edition from 1985 contains a transcription of the original Latin text-which was rendered in imitation of the dense, hand-copied manuscript of the day-paired with an English translation by Jean-Marie Dodu. The first volume also includes a history of Johannes Gutenberg and his invention, and an examination of the 42-line Bible itself, while the second includes color reproductions of a few pages of the Mazarin Bible, a bibliography, and a map showing where the extant copies reside around the world. 1317p, 2 volumes (Editions Les Incunables 1985). Hardback.
