WINCHESTER

William Paulet, c. 1483-1572, from 1550 Treasurer, from 1551 1st Marquess) Document signed, with transcription, to Mr Felton,
praying him "to take order that one of the iiij [four] tellers allow the messengers fyve pounds at this liberate for caryng of the extraordynary processe to the receyver", endorsed in Latin "to Andrew Bilsby .. Easter term, 7th year of Queen Elizabeth 50s.",  with a fine engraved portrait of the Marquess  and facsimiles of 4 of his signatures, all "in the possession of J. Thane", 8" x 5¼", c. 1800, the document 5¼" x 7", Westminster, 24th July 1564 The Marquess was a remarkable survivor, which he explained by saying that he came from the willow, not the oak. He was employed by Henry VIII on the highest affairs of state concerning his wives, the church and the monasteries. Henry’s will nominated him to the council of regency, but he joined Northumberland in overthrowing Protector Somerset. After Edward VI’s death, he proclaimed Queen Mary against Lady Jane Grey, yet kept his post as Treasurer on Elizabeth’s succession, perhaps as a counterbalance to Cecil’s foreign projects. A ‘liberate’ is a writ to release something, such as payment due, goods, or a prisoner who has put up bail.

DYALOGUS creaturarum moralisatus.
1483 1483 Stockh.: Johan Snell 1483. Photolithographic facsimile published by G.H. Klemming (General Staff Litho. Institution) 1883. With 120 woodcuts. 158 leaves + (6) pp. Limited to 75 copies only. Bound in newer full vellum in old style with title printed in gold on spine. Binding signed A.B. J.B. Meijel, Halmstad. Browning. Facsimile-edition of the oldest known dated book printed in Sweden. The printer Johan Snell from Lübeck introduced printing into Denmark in 1482 and was summoned to Stockholm by Archbishop Jacob Ulfsson to print a Missal for the Archbishopric of Uppsala, which he completed in 1484. On the eve of St. Thomas, December 20th, 1483, he dated the colophon of these 122 dialogues. It is a collection of moralizing fables and administration of the sacrament, ment for preachment; it is usually attributed to Nicolaus Pergamenus from Bergamo in the 14 century but the Italian philologist Pio Rajna claims that it is the author and physician Magninus or Mayno de Mayneri from Milano who is the real author.Collijn I, 16.
