| Mahzor Roma (Festival Prayers, Roman Rite). |
Soncino and Casal Maggiore, Sons of Israel Nathan Soncino, begun September 1485 (Tishri 5246), finished 21 August 1486 (20 Elul 5247). Printed in larger and smaller square Hebrew letters, vocalized, instructions in Rashi script; 34 lines to the page, with signature. Vol. I, 7 leaves of the 5th quire, containing the prayers for Saterday night (motza'e Shabbat) and the new moon (Rosh Hodesh). Small folio.*Hain 10425. Goff Heb-73. BMC XIII, 42. Steinschneider No. 2576. Offenberg No. 83. Vinograd, Soncino, No. 12. First edition of the first complete Hebrew prayerbook for the whole year. Most copies of this work are incomplete. And nearly all known copies of this work are composed of a mixture of the first edition with the edition Fano 1503-04 of Gershon Soncino. See the research by Isaac Yudlov of 1995 (Kiryat Sefer 64/4): in six of the eighteen copies he examined, the 5th quire is of 1503-04. The present 5th quire (minus the first leaf) of the first part are from the first edition, printed in Soncino in 1485. These 7 leaves are rather rare and lacking in many copies (kind information Dr A.K. Offenberg). "It seems especially to have roused the ire of the Inquisitors, for its destruction is almost complete; of the copies extant all bear traces of the hand of its foes, and torn pages still further defaced by the ink scrawl of censors are eloquent in their silence"(Amram 60). After the completion of the first volume the Soncino family had evidently taken hasty flight from Soncino to Casal Maggiore, a little town about twenty-two miles east of Cremona, a flight which marks the beginning of their wanderings from city to city until the final exodus from Italy in 1527. - Some margins frayed, some blank marginal tears and some blank marginal repairs, just touching a few letters, browned and some brown stains.[(5764)]
