PIETRO D’ABANO.

Tractatus de Venenis.
[Colophon:] Rome: [no printer,] 1490. 4to, 18 unnumbered leaves. Gothic letter, 33 lines. Modern dark unlettered sheep, fine copy. Eighth printing, but the fifth separate edition. The first printed book on toxicology, treating of poisons and their antidotes. “The topics considered in its six main chapters are: the classification of poisons, how they act upon the body, how to guard against them, the effects and cures of a long list of particular poisons, and finally the problem of a panacea or bezoar against all poisons” (Thorndike). The poisons considered are wide ranging, and include arsenic and hemlock, narcotics, and animal poisons. The author makes reference to the loadstone as a poison if taken internally, and to two kinds of magnet (see Mottelay, p. 501, referring to this edition). Pietro d’Abano was born near Padua in 1250, and wrote De venenis in about 1316. First printed with his Conciliator at Mantua in 1472, the same year as Bagellardo’s book on paediatrics, it was one of the first books on a specific medical speciality to be printed. Klebs 774.8. BMC IV, 91. For a full account of this book, and of Pietro d’Abano’s life and other works, see Thorndike, II, pp. 874–947, and for the more bizarre aspects of his life (and death), see the Biographie Générale.

AN ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF WITH A MINIATURE OF...

France, ca. 1490 159 x 108 mm. (6 1/4 x 4 1/4""). Single column 25 lines of text in an attractive bâtarde hand. Rubric in red one two-line gold initial on a blue ground verso with a panel border containing acanthus leaves on brown or pink grounds alternating with heart-shaped brushed gold compartments containing flowers and fruit RECTO with a three-quarter border of similar design and WITH A CHARMING MINIATURE OF THE VIRGIN MARY (the miniature measuring approximately 52 x 40 mm). Top portion (perhaps half?) of the border in upper margin trimmed off a hint of soil otherwise in very fine condition the miniature bright and clean. The Virgin Mary is shown here in her eternal aspect as the ever youthful queen of heaven her body radiating holiness. The folds of her blue robe are delineated with a good deal of gold and she wears a crown on her golden hair. Her mouth is like a red rosebud and beneath a high forehead and arched brows her eyes glance shyly to the left as she clasps her hands in prayer.

AN ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF WITH A MINIATURE DEPICTING THE CRUCIFIXION FROM A BOOK OF HOURS IN LATIN.

TEXT FROM THE OPENING OF THE HOURS OF THE CROSS.
France, ca. 1490 Single column three lines of text under the miniature (15 on the obverse) in an attractive gothic book hand. Rubrics in red four one- or two-line initials in burnished gold on a ground of blue or magenta with white tracery three-line initial in blue with white tracery enclosing flowers of orange and white the whole on a ground of burnished gold full border of acanthus leaves and other foliage and flowers the flowers partly within geometric shapes (resembling chevrons) of brushed gold or magenta the border enclosing A MINIATURE PAINTING OF THE CRUCIFIXION. Border trimmed at right and bottom (and grazed at top) slight loss of paint in one face (but features still quite clear) otherwise very pleasing the colors rich and the vellum clean. The artist here has put a good deal of feeling into the portrayal of the Crucifixion. The body of Christ is elongated emaciated and pale (the latter especially noticeable because of the contrast with the vividly red flowing blood) and pain is clearly expressed on his drooping face. The Virgin looks up at her son dolefully while John glalnces aside in despair. $1950

AN ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF WITH A MINIATURE DEPICTING THE NATIVITY FROM A BOOK OF HOURS IN LATIN.

TEXT FROM THE OPENING OF PRIME.
France, ca. 1490 Single column three lines of text under the miniature (13 on the obverse) in an attractive gothic book hand. Rubrics in red one one- and one three-line initial in blue orange and burnished gold full border of acanthus leaves and other foliage and flowers the flowers partly within pyramids of black or magenta the border enclosing A MINIATURE PAINTING OF THE NATIVITY. Border trimmed at left and bottom (and just grazed at top) significant paint erosion in one cloak slight loss in Virgin’s face (but features still quite clear) slight blur to initial beneath the miniature otherwise very well preserved. This and the next three leaves are miniatures from the same fragment of a manuscript done in France at the end of the 15th century. The paintings are quaint without being crude and they all seem to achieve at least a degree of genuine feeling be it reverence grief or solemnity. In the present scene of the Nativity the Virgin and Joseph have serious pious expressions in contrast to the surprised and curious faces of the ox and the donkey who hover over the Christ child from whom rays of gold emanate. $1750

Hrsg. v. Plaitakis, Andreas

Cerebellar Degenerations: Clinical Neurobiology
Springer Verlag Cerebellar Degenerations: Clinical Neurobiology Hrsg. v. Plaitakis, Andreas Verlag : Springer US ISBN : 978-0-7923-1490-5 Einband : Gebunden Preisinfo : 416,23 Eur[D] Seiten/Umfang : 524 S. Erschienen : 1. Aufl. 31.05.1992 Gewicht : 908 g Aus der Reihe : Foundations of Neurology 416,23 Eur[D] This book encompasses basic and clinical reports on the cerebellum and its primary atrophic disorders, the cerebellar degenerations. Rapid progress has been made in understanding the organization and function of the cerebellum at the neuronal, synaptic and molecular level. Of particular importance has been the identification of the chemical transmitters utilized by the cerebellar cellular systems. More than any other brain region the cerebellum utilizes amino acids as its main excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters. Excitatory amino acid transmitters, in addition to serving neuronal communication, may also mediate trophic and toxic effects and, as such, they may play a role in neurodegenerative processes. This volume will be useful to clinicians who care for patients with cerebellar disorders as well as to the basic and the clinical investigators whose work concerns the cerebellum. Knowledge of advances occurring in basic sciences will help the clinical investigator to develop new approaches and therapeutic strategies for these presently intractable human disorders. Also the basic investigator will benefit from the study of human disorders by identifying new research leads provided by these intractable -- yet fascinating -- afflictions.
