BACON, John.
| Opus super quatuor sententiarum libris. |
Milan, in off. Leonardi Vegii 1510-11. Folio, 4 works in 2 vols, ff.227 (missing final blank), 151 (i), 123 (i), 205 (i). Double column, Roman letter, one very fine large initial of Bacon teaching, smaller woodcut initials throughout. Some scattered small round wormholes, markedly only in final gatherings of last part, C16 conventual ex libris of Spanckenburg near Utrecht at head of first t-p and C19 label of the parish church of St. Peters Fritzlar near Kassel in blank of third. Ms donors inscription dated 1536 in a German or English hand of W. [?] de Bowen to the Monastry of St. Peter at Fritzlar on front pastedown of both vols. Fine crisp copies in contemp. calf over bds, two rectangular triple line panels to covers outer with repeated stamps of fleur de lys, heart pierced by arrows and roses at corners, inner with triple ruled lattice work containing large roses, rosettes, pierced hearts etc., spines with raised bands and five compartments. Remains of contemp. library label at head of each upper cover, pastedown taken from an early ms. in a non scribal miniscule hand, printed ex libris of Jean Furstenberg, 4 original clasps. A splendid copy of the very rare and important first collective edition of the works of Bacon and the FIRST EDITION of the second part. Bacon otherwise known as 'Baco' or 'Baconthorpe' (in Norfolk where he hailed from) of 1346, was the grandnephew of the celebrated Roger and almost equally renowned. After Oxford he removed to Paris where he took his degree in both common and civil law and began to attempt the mastery of almost every field of learning. Very largely he succeeded. He wrote on theology, logic, astronomy and astrology on pontifical canons and generation, Augustine's 'Civitas Dei', the movement of animals and the metaphysics of Aristotle. His students once buried him in his own writings, Bacon was admittedly a small man but they managed it twice over. The resolute doctor as he was known, was the crowning intellect of the Carmelite order (and its sometime head) as Aquinas was to the Dominicans and Scotus to the Franciscans. He was a firm adherent to the doctrines of Averroes which he did much to synthesize with more orthodox teachings and he was largely responsible for the revival of Averroesism which persevered, at least in certain universities until well into the C17. Sadly of the more than 100 titles which Bacon produced almost nothing except for the present commentary on the sentences of Peter the Lombard came to be printed and his other writings, despite their earlier fame, are now almost unknown. Three volumes of this commentary were first printed by Martineau in 1484 and 1485 but are now unfindable. Goff records a single copy of Book 1 with the Franciscans at Quebec, of Book III at Harvard and of Book IV, nowhere in in North America. Shaaber (cit. infr.) locates 13 copies of the present work, 4 in England, 7 in Germany and one in each of Austria and Italy respectively, but not all are complete, the BL copy contains three books only. No copy is recorded in N. America. The 2 vols. remain in a particularly fine contemp. calf binding, conceptually identical (though individual tools differ) to that reproduced by Oldham in 'English Blind Stamped Bindings' at plate IV, and described as an unlocated binding of Netherlandish design. However, in the present case the outer frame comprises lozenge stamps only (which suggests English provenance) rather than altenating lozenge and roundstamps (which suggest the Netherlands), and the sharp bevel round the edge of the boards characteristic of the Netherlands is also absent, the finish of the leather also indicates an English origin. BM STC It. p.67. Adams B17. Shaaber B6. Sarton vol III pt.1 p.502. Sander 730. cf. **herta, De scriptoribus scholasticis seculi XIV ex ordine ****, fasc. 6, Louvin 1931.SN2581.

POSTEL, GUILLAUME.
| De republica, seu magistratibus Atheniensium Liber. Ex musæo Joan. Balesdens, In Orincipe Senatu Advocati. Accessie Antonii Thysii IC. Discursus Politicus de eadem museria, & Collatio Atticarum & Romanarum legum. Leiden, Joannis Maire, 1645 |
16mo. (14)+5-232+(8)+241-368 p. + engr. portrait of Guillaume Posel. A little later brown full calf. Covers with a single gilet filet around the border and with a blind tooled decoration. Spine gilt. 2 parts in 1 but paginated throughout. The 'De Republica' ends at page 232, page 233-240 contains the index followed by a blank leaf, followed by Anton Thys's text on page 241-368. There is a jump in the pagination after the dedication, the text start at page 5, but the book is complete. The books are a political and legislative history of Athens, written by the wellknown French linguist, astronomer, Cabbalist, diplomat, professor, and religious universalist Guillaume Postel (1510-81). The first edition was published in Paris 1641. The present edition was expanded and augmented with the treatise by Anton Thys (1603-1665) a humanist professor of Philology at Leiden. Hoefer XL,879 , Brunet IV,839. Quérard VII,290. Graesse V,424. Guillaume Postel, studied oriental languages in Paris and was commissioned by François I to buy manuscripts in the Near East. In 1538 he published 'De originibus seu de hebraicae linguae et gentis antiquitate', the first of a number of publications in French, Latin, and Hebrew on the affairs of the Middle East. In the early 1540s he formulated a theory he was to propound throughout his life, that of peace through a universal religion, 'De orbis terrae concordia' (1543-44), drawing upon his knowledge of the Turks. He travelled around the Middle East, Italy, and Eastern Europe. In 1555 he was interrogated by the Inquisition and judged to be insane. He was imprisoned for four years in Rome. He was an expert on languages, mathematics, and theology. See NBG 40,879-885, and about Anton Thys (1603-65) see NBG 45, 328-329.
