Das Gedicht "Pe lekus" ("Axt" / fol.m1 verso) fasst eine Holzschnittumrahmung in Form einer minoischen Doppelaxt, "Surligx" ("Hirtenflöte" / fol. i8 verso) eine in Form einer Flöte ein; bei "Pteruglos" ("Flügel"/ fol.m 3 recto) wählte Kallierges eine Zeilenanordnung in Flügelform, auf der Verso-Seite des gleichen Blattes eine in Form eines Podestes. Komplett im originalen Griechisch gedruckt. Maroquin des späten 18. Jahrhunderts (Ecken bestoßen [tls. mit kleinen Bezugsfehlstellen], stellenweise berieben, Rücken erneuert) mit goldgeprägten Stehkantenfileten. Erste kommentierte Theokrit-Ausgabe, zugleich editio princeps der Epigramme, einiger Idyllen sowie der Gedichte "Axt" und "Flügel"; früher Abzug. Im britischen Verbundkatalog werden zwei Varianten dieser Ausgabe unterschieden: Das Wort "enestin" auf dem Titelblatt mit fehlendem Sigma oder korrekt gedruckt; im ersten Fall fehlt das lateinische Privileg auf dem letzten Bl. verso, das im zweiten Fall vorhanden ist. Unser Exemplar ist eine - nach unserer Kenntnis bisher nicht beschriebene - dritte Variante: Titelblatt mit Druckfehler (das fehlende Sigma wurde von Hand in alter Tinte ergänzt), letztes Bl. verso mit Privileg. Das fehlende Sigma spricht für einen frühen, noch nicht korrigierten Abzug. Zacharias Kallierges (um 1473 - nach 1524), "der bedeutendste griechische Drucker" (Graecogermania S. 75), ließ sich - nach zwei Phasen als Drucker in Venedig und einer zwischenzeitlichen Tätigkeit als Kopist griechischer Handschriften - ab 1524 in Rom nieder und baute dort die erste Druckerei, die griechsche Typen verwendete, auf. Er stammte aus einer der vornehmsten kretischen Familien und hatte eine hervorragende humanistische Ausbildung genossen; die befähigte ihn, erstmals antike Scholien zu Theokrit zu sammeln und herauszugeben (und damit wurde er richtungsweisend für zahlreiche Theokrit-Ausgaben der Folgezeit, die seine Scholien immer wieder nachdruckten). Die Theokrit-Edition ist Kallierges' zweiter Druck in Rom (nach dem Pindar von 1515), die vierte Werkausgabe des griechischen Lyrikers insgesamt, die erste mit Scholien und den Epigrammen. Theokrit (geb. vor 300 v. Chr. wohl in Syrakus, gest. nach 260), hat einen Teil seines Schriftsteller-Lebens in Alexandria (wo er Kallimachos kennenlernte), einen anderen auf der Insel Kos verbracht; mehr ist an Biographischem nicht bekannt. Die Bezeichnung "Eidyllia" geht auf die Theokrit-Scholien zurück, meint aber noch nicht "Hirtenpoesie" wie später, sondern allgemein "kleine Formen"; der Ursprung des Begriffs liegt im Dunkeln. Theokrit hat die Hirtenpoesie in die Literatur eingeführt und so Schule gemacht: Vergil gehört zu seinen Nachahmern, und der wiederum hat bis in die Moderne Lyriker zu solchen bukolischen Gedichten angeregt. "Während Vergil ein idealisiertes Hirtenleben in arkadischer Landschaft zeichnet, schildert Theokrit die Hirten seiner Heimat mit größerem Realismus" (Lesky. S. 811). Herrscherlob und volkstümliches Brauchtum sind weitere Themen des Dichters. Die Epigramme finden sich als Grabinschriften auf berühmte Dichter, allgemein als Weiheinschriften, einige wenige auch wieder als bukolische Literatur. Als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter des sog. Alexandrinismus, der höfischen Poesie im Umkreis der Ptolemäerherrscher in Alexandria, setzt er sich systematisch mit der klassischen, polisorientierten Literatur auseinander und vor allem auch von ihr ab. So sind seine Gedichte voller Zitate und Anspielungen, aber auch getragen von ironischer Distanz und dem Bemühen, herkömmliche Grenzen zu ignorieren und überkommene Regeln zu durchbrechen (s. Effe im Nachwort zur Tusc.-Ausg.). Vorderer Spiegel mit Papierfehlstelle und einem montierten lateinischen Sechszeiler, datiert "1816", vorderer fliegender Vorsatz oben im Falz leicht gelockert und mit hand- schriftlichem Eintrag. Titel recto oben mit verblasstem Besitzereintrag ("Aeg. Delaunay"), wohl mit der gleichen Tinte wie die Ergänzung des fehlenden Sigma; einige handschr. Marginalien in griechischer Sprache, großenteils ebenfalls verblasst. Durchgehend leicht gebräunt, stellenweise etwas fleckig, ca. 15 Bll. im unteren weißen Rand mit kleinem, tls. restauriertem, Wurmgang. Ein gut erhaltenes Exemplar dieses wichtigen und seltenen Drucks. He coined the word "utopia"--a name he gave to an ideal, imaginary island nation. First published in 1516, UTOPIA, his most famous and controversial novel, describes the political arrangements of the imaginary island nation of Utopia (a play on the Greek ou-topos, meaning "no place", and eu-topos, meaning "good place"). More contrasts the social life of European states with Utopia. In Utopia, private property does not exist and almost complete religious tolerance is practiced. The book advocates the need for order and discipline, rather than liberty. The society described is almost totalitarian, and very far removed from present day ideals of freedom. So it goes. Archibald Douglas rector of Douglas, George Auchinlek .. with divers others", vellum, 1 side 2"x5¼", Dalkeith, 1569 Morton procured the murder of Rizzio, ‘discovered’ the casket letters and led the van at the battle of Langside against Mary’s supporters. He was also implicated in Darnley’s murder, for which he was finally charged and executed in 1581. The Archibald Douglas who witnessed this document was a cousin of Morton’s wife, being a grandson of the 2nd Earl. (Morton was Earl in right of his wife). The old kirk at Douglas where he was rector is the burial place of the Douglases. He too was implicated in Rizzio’s and Darnley’s murder. By 1572 he had been installed, after great opposition, as parson of Glasgow (St. Mungo’s, the cathedral). When Morton was apprehended in 1580, Douglas was forewarned and fled to England. A packed jury acquitted him of all treasons in 1586, and he was sent as ambassador to England, where he contributed to the condemnation of Queen Mary. Signed also ‘Angius’, i.e. ‘of Angus’, the 8th Earl, 1553-1588, another Archibald Douglas, Morton’s nephew and ward, being the son of Morton’s elder brother David, briefly 3rd Earl in 1555. The young earl attended St. Andrews, and carried the sword at James’ first parliament in 1567. When his uncle was apprehended in December 1580 by his political enemies, he planned an English invasion to support him, but was detected and fled to England., where he got to know Sir Philip Sidney. He was later pardoned, and was lieutenant-general of Scotland in 1586. His neat signature is based on Italian models rather than a secretary hand. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Translated from the Greek, with notes. Leather bound with gilt lettering to spines and cloth covered boards. Complete in three volumes and illustrated with 2 lovely folding maps and 5 engraved folding plates. One of the most important texts of classical antiquity, first published by Aldus in 1516. A second-century A.D. guidebook, in the form of a tour, through the Peloponese and northern Greece, and which is divided into ten books: 1. Attica and Megara. 2. Argolis, including Mycenae, Tiryns, and Epidaurus. 3. Laconia. 4. Messenia. 5-6. Elis, including Olympia; 7. Achaea. 8. Arcadia. 9. Boeotia. 10. Phocis, including Delphi. In each, Pausanias describes the historical sites, topography, and customs of the regions, often adding historical background information, bits of local folklore, and relating contemporary anecdotes. It is, however, in descriptions of monuments of ancient art and architecture that Pausanias excells, and which have made this a work of lasting importance. The bindings are tight and firm and all covers are firmly attached. There is some wear to the extremities, particularly to the spines which are chipped and rubbed. The cloth to the rear board of Vol. II is also damaged. Internally the books are clean and bright apart from some isolated spots. There are some worming holes to a number of the pages of Vol. I, which do affect the folding plates, though not the engravings themselves. The folding maps are hardly affected at all and are in good condition. There are also some very isolated worming holes to Vol. III. There is an ownership plate to the front paste down of all three volumes.. Second Edition. Full-Leather. Good. 16mo - over 5!" - 6!" tall.
