AILLY, Pierre d'.

Meditationes Super Septem Psalmos. WITH: Officium Defunctorum. [Flanders?, ca. 1520]. 46 manuscript leaves, mostly 19.2 x 12.5 cm. First work: batarde, 22 or 23 lines per page ruled in pale red ink; headings in red, initials (1-2 lines) in blue or red, some letters filled with yellow, paragraph marks in red or blue; some calligraphic flourishes. Second work: liturgical gothic minuscule, without rubrication or embellishment of any kind, all initials, and title spaces left blank. Nineteenth-century brown morocco.
      (46) ll. Ad 1: Stegmüller, Repertorium IV (1954) 6408; NBG I, cols 461-463; ad 2: see The Hours of the Divine Office (Collegeville 1963) for a Latin-English version. Two manuscript works, the first one in an early sixteenth-century, Flemish hand. The first work is Pierre d'Ailly's Meditationes Super Septem Psalmos, written in 1417. Each of the seven penitential psalms is introduced by a prayer, followed by some verses of the particular psalm which, in their turn, are followed by a commentary of meditation. Stegmüller lists a number of manuscripts (Bern, Bodleian, Cambrai, Bibliothèque Nationale) to which should be added BM Royal MS 6.E.iii. De Ricci & Bond do not list a manuscript copy of the text. The work was first published in Paris in 1483. Fol. 1r opens with the introduction, which begins imperfectly: "dies mei sicut umbra declinaverunt." If complete, the opening would have read: "Vera penitentia velut scala quaedam est." The introduction finishes in the middle of fol. 2r: "satis ex sequentibus apparebit." It is followed by the beginning of the text: "Devota meditacio super primo psalmo penitentiali. Domine Ihesu christe future Judex seculi qui bonos in celeste regnum." The text ends (again imperfectly) on fol. 39v: "timorem pene dolorem culpe. Spem." Probably only one leaf is lacking here. If complete, the end would have read: "quo me finaliter deduci et feliciter ascendere tecum habitare. in secula seculorum amen." Most of the leaves measure 19.2 x 12.5 cm, but leaves 37-39 are a little shorter. The textblock measures c. 11 x 8 cm and contains 22 or 23 lines of batardes written by a very skilled scribe. The lines have been ruled in pale red ink, the headings are in red, the initials (one to two lines) in blue or red, some letters are filled with yellow, paragraph marks in red or blue. The ascenders in the top lines are often exaggeratedly tall and filled with yellow; some descenders in the bottom lines have calligraphic flourishes, see especially fol. 34r. On fol. 28v the top of the long "I" is embellished with a humorous sketch of a bird with a human head. Very faint writing is visible in the upper margin of fol. 26r. It is unclear if it is a palimpsest or offset. On fol. 31r there is erased writing of a much later date (eighteenth century?), probably a name. The letters "R.K." are written in red ink, in large capitals, in the lower margin of fol. 23v. Pierre d'Ailly (1350-1420 or 1425), Bishop of Le Puy and Cambrai, Chancellor of the University of Paris in 1389 and cardinal in 1412, author of numerous writings in different fields, played an important role in the intellectual life of his time. The Officium Defunctorum in our manuscript is an incomplete service for the dead. The text begins imperfectly on fol. 40r: "(O)mina excelsa tua et fluctus tui super me transierunt" (Ps. 41:8). It ends imperfectly on fol. 46v: "et campi tui replebuntur ubertate." (Ps. 64:12). It seems as if the present manuscript is from a Breviary which was left unfinished. The Office for the Dead stood often in close proximity to the seven penitential psalms in a Breviary. The present Office for the Dead is written in a liturgical gothic minuscule, without rubrication or any embellishment, all in initials and the title spaces have been left blank. There are mostly sixteen to seventeen lines to a page and the textblock measures c. 12 x 8 cm. In the top margin of fol. 43r, "Charles Leslie" is written (with a stylus?) in a large, much later (c. eighteenth-century) hand. In very good condition.
