Omnia Opera Tralatione Marsilii Ficini, Emendatione Et Ad Graecum Codicem Collatione Simonis Grynaei Nunc recens summa diligentia repurgata.
Basel: In Officina Frobeniana, [Apud Hieronymum Frobenium & Micolaum Episcopium, August], 1532. folio. pp. 6 p.l., 959, [1]. woodcut printer’s device on title & at end. woodcut initials. several text diagrams. A nice wide-margined copy in contemporary blind-stamped calf over wooden bds., 1 brass catch, lacking clasps (covers scuffed, rear cover with a few small round wormholes, spine ends & corners worn, paper label on upper spine, tear in Tt4-6 – no loss). Sixth Edition of the Latin Translation by Marsilio Ficino, the first to contain the careful revisions of distinguished Protestant theologian Simon Grynaeus [1493-1541]. Grynaeus, a friend of Melanchthon and Erasmus, and professor of Greek at Heidelberg (1523) and Basel (1536), was also the editor of the second Greek edition of Plato, published at Basel in 1534. Ficino’s translation, begun in 1466 and first published in 1484-85, made his name famous in the history of scholarship and has been called "the best translation of that author Italy can boast." (Encyc. Britan., 11th Edn.) The manuscripts on which he worked were supplied by his patron Cosimo de’ Medici and by Americo Benci. While the translation was in progress, Ficino periodically submitted its pages for discussion and revision to Angelo Poliziano, Christoforo Landino, Demetrios Chalchondylas, and other fellow scholars who were members of the Platonic Academy. "Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499) was the most influential representative of Renaissance Platonism. Together with Alberti, Pico della Mirandola, Cosimo de’ Medici, Politian, and Landino, he founded the Platonic Academy in Florence. Although several works of Plato had been available in Latin translations prior to the fifteenth century, Ficino made the first complete translation of the Platonic corpus into a Western language (1484). This publication marks a major point in the intellectual history of Europe. The work was of such high quality that it remained in general use until the eighteenth century.  (Univ. of Chicago, Berlin Collection) A fine early edition from a notable sixteenth century press. Adams P1445. Graesse V 320. cfBM STC German p. 702 (1546). cfPrinting and the Mind of Man 27.

HUTTICH, Joannes]. GRYNAEUS, Simon.

Novus orbis regionum ac insularum ueteribus incognitarum: una cum tabula cosmographica, & aliquot alijs consimilis argumenti libellis, quorum omnium catalogus sequenti patebit pagina: his accessit copiosus rerum memorabilium index.
Apud Io. Hervagium, Basil 1532 First edition. Folio in sixes (11 1/2 x 8 1/16 inches; 294 x 203 mm.). (xxxvi), 584 (i.e. 586), [1, colophon], [1, printer's device] pp. With the extremely scarce woodcut world map entitled: "Typus Cosmographicus Universalis". The map is in the first state (Harrisse 'A'). with the type height of the word 'ASIA' being 8 millimeters. It also has the unusual feature of having the place names printed typographically over the woodcut map. The map is on two leaves, each being folded and measuring 365 x 293 mm. The map is very decorative with figures of sea monsters, ships, allegorical figures in the margins and two cartouches. Woodcuts on pages 30 and 129 by Hans Holbein. The fourth signature (delta) was not bound into this copy as is often the case (including the Library of Congress copy) with this book and, in point of fact, many of the early bibliographers-Camus, Panzer, Maittare, etc.-did not even know of the existence of the map much less of this signature which is a preface to the map. The most logical reason for the seeming prevalence of the absence of signature delta was that the author of this particular signature, Sebastian Munster (as opposed to the rest of the book which was penned by Huttich), was on the Index Prohibitorum and any copy bound in Italy, as this copy appears to have been, would have had this signature removed. Contemporary limp vellum with manuscript spine lettering and remains of thong ties. Tear to fold line of one map sheet repaired quite some time ago. Housed in a cloth clamshell case. Overall, an excellent copy of this rare book; with the exceedingly rare map, clean, well-margined and in a fine contemporary binding. First edition of this fine collection of voyages to the newly discovered lands of America, Africa, and the East, which is usually listed under the name of Simon Grynaeus, although he only wrote the preface. The compilation was actually made by Joannes Huttichius, a learned humanist in Strassburg. The following sections are of serious importance in study of the early discoveries of America: The first three voyages of Christopher Colombus (pp. 115-118), Vincente Yanes Pinzon's voyage (pp. 122-130), the duplicate of Vespuccius' third voyage (pp. 130-142), the four voyages of Vespuccius, copied from Gruninger's edition (pp. 184-187), the extract of the Fourth Decade of Peter Martyr (pp. 570-584) as well as the voyages of Cadamosto, Nino and Cabral. Other travel descriptions deal with the travels of Marco Polo, voyages to Africa, Russia, Palestine, the Moluccas, etc.The map contained in this volume has been hotly debated through the ages, both on its authorship and on its inclusion in this book. In the end, it has been widely agreed that while extremely scarce the map does indeed belong with the book (see Harrisse and Sabin; though Harrisse does say "Whether they were the maps really belonging to the work, and described by Munster, we are unable to say, as no two copies of this book had the same")."This map from the artistic point of view in one of the most interesting of the many world maps turned out in the sixteenth century. The world is shown on an oval projection surrounded by scenes of outlandish animals, people and customs of the distant parts of the globe. The masterful delineation of these scenes, as well as of the ships and sea-monsters which embellish the oceans, has caused the design of the map to be attributed to the renowned Hanns Holbein the Younger, who had many relations with the Basel publishers. During his third Basel period he designed a number of illustrations for books issued by the geographer Sebastian Munster, to whom the map was formerly attributed" (The World Encompassed, 66). "The newly rediscovered world is represented on the north of a long strip of land, bearing the inscription Terra de Cuba. The southern part contains these words only: Parias, Canibali, AMERICA TERRA NOVA, Prisilia' (Harrisse). Thus, North and South America appear as two separate continents, not fa

Vegetius Renatus, Flavius.

Fl. Vegetii Renati...de re Militari libri quatuor. Sexti Ivlii Frontini...de Strategematis libri totidem. Aeliani de instruendis Aciebus liber vnus. Modesti de vocabulis rei Militaris liber vnus. Item picturae bellicae cxx passim Vegetio adiectae. Collata sunt omnia ad antiquos codices, maxime Bvdaei, quod testabitur Aelianus.
Paris: Christianum Wechelum, Anno M. D. XXXII [1532]. Folio, (8), 279, (1, woodcut device)pp. Woodcut illustration on title of a military council, verso with full-page wood-cut of a man loading a canon, woodcut of a lansquenet facing the first page of text (repeated at the end of the text), 119 full-page wood-cuts, one half-page wood-cut diagram, decorative wood-cut initials, typographic illustrations in the text depicting military maneuvers. 16th-century calf, covers with the later supralibros in gilt of Petrus de Villars Cardinal Archbishop of Austria and an ink inscription on the title-page noting it is from his library. A very good large copy with some leaves untrimmed. First edition of this version. Fairfax Murray notes: Ò120 full-page cuts of military engines &c...several resembling those in Valturius but evidently adapted mostly in reverse from...the edition of Erfurt 1511...Among the more remarkable cuts, not represented in the Valturius, are pneumatic beds, similar boots for walking in the water, diving dresses, improved firearms, an 'armoured train', impenetrable footwear &c., &c.Ó These illustrations are among the most interesting and unusual wood-cuts of the period. Also of interest, and passed over by Updike, is the use of type to show military formations, again creating an almost surreal look to the page. An uncommon book in decent condition; only two copies have sold at auction in the last 13 years. Harvard French, 486. Not in Brunet but see vol. V, 1162 for the 1534 edition. Not in Fairfax Murray French, but see 563 for the 1535 edition.
