|
2 Werke in 1 Bd. 16mo. Mit Holzschnitt-Druckermarke auf Titel. 141, [1] S., 1 leeres Bl.; 180 S., [10] Bl. Index. Pergamentband d. Z. (etwas fleckig). Paris, Ex. Officina Robert Estienne, September 1545, resp. Dezember 1548. Jhdt. in: Gutenberg Jb. 1960, 211f.; vgl. Schreiber 58 und 61. Ad I) Augmented second edition of the first of Charles Etienne's children's books which were based on original information drawn from Etienne's own great interest in botany rather than on excerpts from Lazare de Baif. The work gives a systematic survey of all the Latin names of plants and trees (and their French translation) and instructs how they are identified. - Ad II) First published in 1536 this work deals with the nomenclature and cultivation of fruit-trees. The two works, here conveniently bound up together, were the most popular books written to teach children on botanical subjects. - Titles slightly dust soiled, first title with small brown spot in lower margin.

GLISSENTI FABIO

| DISCORSI MORALI DELLECCELL. SIG. FABIO GLISSENTI CONTRA IL DISPIACER DEL MORIRE DETTO ATHANOPHILIA DIVISI IN CINQUE DIALOGHI, OCCORSI IN CINQUE GIORNATE. NE QUALI SI DISCORRE QUANTO RAGIONEVOLMENTE SI DOVREBBE DESIDERAR LA MORTE, ... VENEZIA BARTOL |
Legatura in mezza pergamena (novecentesca).

- Blätter in unterer Ecke tls. leicht fingerfleckig.

|
| Literature, Travel, and Colonial Writing in the English Renaissance 1545-1625 |
Oxford University Press 1999 What was the purpose of representing foreign lands for writers in the English Renaissance? This wide-ranging study argues that writers often used their works as vehicles to reflect on the state of contemporary English politics, particularly their own lack of representation in public institutions. Sometimes such analyses took the form of displaced allegories, whereby writers contrasted the advantages enjoyed, or disadvantages suffered, by foreign subjects with the political conditions of Tudor and Stuart England. Elsewhere, more often in explicitly colonial writings, authors meditated on the problems of government when faced with the possibly violent creation of a new society. If Venice was commonly held up as a beacon of republican liberty which England would do well to imitate, the fear of tyrannical Catholic Spain was ever present - inspiring and haunting much of the colonial literature from 1580 onwards. 305pp. Grade A. | Adriaen Thomasz Key (ca.1545- ca.1589). Portrait of a Calvinist Painter |
396 p., 199 b/w ill.+38 colour ill. Brepols. Hardback. English Text: Art history has not given Adriaen Thomasz. Key’s legacy its proper due, to say the least. After a short and successful artistic career in a turbulent period, Adriaen Thomasz. Key vanished from the stage for centuries. Barring his art, he left few other traces behind and over time even this came to be riddled with the most far-fetched attributions. In the past, connoisseurs were often at a complete loss. Adriaen Thomasz.’s pictures were ascribed to a host of painters from numerous countries and periods [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Venice, ca. 1545-53 The Stunning Frontispiece of a 16th Century Dogale The full-page composition consisting of a large five-lobed compartment surmounted by the winged lion of St. Mark (the symbol of Venice) containing A LARGE AND MEMORABLE SCENE SHOWING THE DIPLOMAT PIETRO PIZZAMANO BEING SENT ON HIS MISSION BY ST. PETER; the apostle pointing to the sky where the virgin and child appear radiating light and surrounded by clouds while on a hill in the background a shepherd and his sheep done in pale grisaille with golden highlights marvel at the celestial vision; the scene surrounded by a frame of sprays of gold leaves and pink and blue flowers and with two golden fish-tailed tritons adorning the lower corners an heraldic shield (presumably of Pizzamano) appearing between them. Small holes along edges as remnants of earlier mounting areas of green paint (and a few other very small places) slightly abraded with minor loss a few barely discernible tiny holes resulting from the oxidation of ink on the verso otherwise IN REMARKABLY FINE CONDITION STILL VERY FRESH AND BRIGHT. This leaf was the frontispiece of a dogale or document of a doge the chief magistrate in the republic of Venice a position of great importance before the 13th century but an office that became increasingly encumbered with pomp and reduced in power until being abolished at the end of the 18th century. In the present document Doge Francesco Donà (ruling from 1545-53) appoints Pizzamano Venetian consul in Syria for an initial term of three years. Our painting of an official commission is characterized by a very high level of artistry in Mannerist style. The rather young Pizzamano has an ascetic face and pointed beard while St. Peter is still vigorous even in old age his features carefully modelled. The composition is animated colorful and full of convincing detail particularly in the figure of Peter. The work can be attributed to the artist known as Master "T.o Ve." the head of a workshop active in Venice from the reign of Doge Andrea Gritti (1523-38) to that of Alvise I Mocenigo (1570-72). The Master takes his name from a note on a Ducale leaf in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge (Marlay Cutting It. 43). For more on this artist see Giulia Maria Zuccolo Padrono’s "Il Maestro ‘T.o Ve.’ e la sua bottega: Miniature Veneziane del XVIo Secolo" in "Arte Veneta" vol. 25 pp 53-71; and "Leaves of Gold Manuscript Illuminations from Philadelphia Collections" edited by J. R. Tanis and J. A. Thompson Philadelphia 2001 pp 222-23 No. 77. $10000
